Happy Canada Day, Amy! This article made me homesick again. I have many similar memories of growing up in BC. It is a beautiful province, despite its continued political and social decline.
I moved from Prince Edward Island to the Canadian Arctic, and it showed me there is so much more to this country than I ever imagined. Of course there is no place like home, sat at my mothers kitchen table eating homemade chicken soup and fresh biscuits something I will always cherish.
Our growing up story is much the same. It made us who we are. There is so much beauty and so much to give thanks for but we seem to be going askew these days in many ways and I’m happy to be able to lean in with you to bring us back and get us pointed in the right direction.
A good friend of mine is from Fort St John! Not a town I hear mentioned too often.
Just had a lovely Canada Day dinner (poutine and a lobster roll, Labatt Blue on tap — the latter as bad as I remembered) with a bunch of other expats in Santa Monica, CA. Your essay did make me a little homesick (even though I’m from the other side of the country)! But it does sound like Canada’s even deeper down the rabbit hole than California.
I was a patriot- used to love playing “Oh Canada” on trumpet
Stood with the maple leaf through all kinds oc weather for My Body My Choice, civil libeties, freedoms of speech/faith/press/assembly- a True North Strong & Free - was called tge worst names
Then they went elbows up with the synthetic nationalism of a kleptocratic globalist, - normalizing the worst attacks on civil liberties/democracy AND the longest string of corruption
There are no pathways to accountability or democracy in this failed confederation
Drop the nostalgia. Are there -any- good reasoms to remain shackled to Ottawa’s trainwreck?

Most Irish people have relatives in the US but those in my family who emigrated went to Canada. We see it as a big Ireland!
